Pavakka theeyal

























A famous Kerala ( South India ) dish, made with Bitter gourd in a thick spicy coconut gravy.

Ingredients:
2 bitter gourd cleaned and cubed
1/2 cup shallots/ kunju ulli ( or a medium size onion cubed)
2 tbsp tamarind juice (extracted)
1/4 tsp turmeric powder
1/2 tsp fenugreek powder
sat to taste
oil

For grinding:
1 cup grated coconut
1 tsp chilly powder ( adjust accordingly)
1 tsp coriander powder
1/2 tsp whole pepper
1 red chilly
1 shallot

For tempering:
1/2 tsp mustard seeds
2 red chillies
few curry leaves

Method:
Heat a kadai adding 1 tbsp oil.
Add onions, bitter gourd, salt to taste and saute until half done.
Roast coconut and the others until brown and grind to a fine paste.
Now add the tamarind juice and 1/2 cup of water and cook, until the bitter gourd is done. ( add tamarind juice according to the bitterness of the bitter gourd).
Add the ground paste, turmeric, fenugreek pwdr and let boil for a few min.
Heat oil in a tempering kadai and pop mustard seeds, red chillies, curry leaves and transfer it to the dish.
Serve hot with rice...!!
